The Under 21 hurlers made the journey to Kilbrittain on Sunday at noon to take on neighbours Bandon in the Clona sponsored A West Cork Final.

In perfect conditions for hurling Bandon took an early 2 point lead until Trevor Horgan pointed from a Cian Healy free that rebounded off the upright. Cian Healy converted 2 frees to take the lead but Bandon drew level twice until Luke Meade converted to take the lead for Newcestown. Following a free from inside our own half Conor O’Neill delivered a long ball into the square and Trevor Horgan capitalised on a mistake by the Bandon keeper to bring the score to 1-5 to 0-4. Within a minute Horgan was fouled, awarded and converted a penalty. Another Cian Healy free left the score after 15 minutes at 2-06 to 0-04. Luke Meade and Andrew Shorten combined to capitalise on a side line cut awarded in between a flurry of 5 Bandon points. But Newcestown replied with points from Luke Meade, Trevor Horgan and 2 frees from Cian Healy. Just before half time Bandon had a goal chance deflected over the bar to leave the score at 2-12 to 0-10 going into the break.

Bandon started strongly in the second half but they had two 20m frees saved in short succession. Points from ace free taker Healy & Luke Meade were the opening scores of the second half. Bandon got going with 3 points until a long ball in from Michael McSweeney led to Luke Meade’s superb goal. Bandon through Michael Cahalane scored 2 more frees to keep them in the hunt until Trevor scored his third goal of the day to bring the scores to 4-14 to 15 points with 15 minutes to go. The last quarter saw each side adding on 3 points to leave the score at full time 4-17 to 0-18.

Mark Courtney accepted the cup on behalf of Newcestown and thanked the referee & his team, the opposition and the Newcestown back room team of Darren Heffernan, Conor Condon and Sean Twomey.
