The Senior footballers got their 2014 Kelleher Shield (Division 1) campaign off to a winning start in Ahamilla on a bitterly cold Sunday afternoon with victory over Clonakilty on a score line of 3-10 to 0-11.

The home side opened the scoring with a pointed free but 2 minutes later Mark Kelly goaled to take the lead which Newcestown held until the final whistle. Points from Cathrach Keane, Eoin Kelly, Darren Heffernan Tadgh Twomey (free) & Mark Kelly left Newcestown ahead by 1-5 to 0-2. In the 20th minute a high ball in to the square from Ger O’Driscoll found the back of the Clon net. The visitors continued to dominate play for the remainder of the half and Clonakilty had 3 points (frees) to Newcestown’s 3-8 at the break.

Clonakilty started stronger in the second half and added 8 points in the second half to 2 from Newcestown (Ger O’Driscoll & Mark Kelly). From early on Newcestown never looked like losing this fixture however by conceding 7 points from frees their winning margin was greatly narrowed.
