The premier intermediate hurlers got their championship campaign off to a winning start last Friday night where they defeated Ballyhea on a score line of 1-21 to 1-9.  In a perfect evening for hurling the St. Johns men got off to a great start and lead by 1-6 to 0-1 after 10 minutes with the goal coming from Cathrach Keane.  However, before half time, Ballyhea reduced the deficit to 1pt.  Newcestown came flying out of the blocks in the second half and with some well taken points (including a point by Daniel Twomey from a sideline), the game was over as a contest well before the final whistle. Eoin Kelly contributed 10 pts (7 from frees) but the score that generated the most interest was a point by veteran corner back Kevin Long.  The historians had a busy weekend to determine when ‘Longie’ last scored in a championship game!!
