The sun shone brightly at Castle Road Camogie Grounds on Saturday 19th October, as the u14 B County Final between Newcestown and Courceys got under way.  Newcestown starting well in the first minute as right wing forward Aoife Buckley scored the first of many goals.

Minutes later, Chloe O’Leary scored a point from a well taken free.  Courceys tested Newcestown’s back line on a number of occasions, but to no avail, as goalie Orla Dinneen flanked by Kate Barry, Keelin Barrett and Eabha Walsh, were firing on all cylinders, leaving little room for error.  Aoife O’Sullivan and Meabh Lynch in particular, digging deep to clear ball to the formidable partnership at midfield between Meabh O’Donovan and Zerica Griffen.

It was to be another while before goal number two materialised from the stick of full forward Maria Kenneally.  The next ten minutes saw both goalies busy making save after save.

Another side line ball by forward Chloe O’Leary to Emma Wilson and onwards to Aoife Buckley who made a solo run from midfield making sure to place the ball in the back of the net.

Newcestown had a number of further opportunities before half time, and the next came with 2 minutes to go as Aishling O’Donovan launched one of many a long ball from her own half to Chloe O’Leary, Chloe passing to Maria who made no mistake in burying the ball in the back of the net.

Half time score: Newcestown 4-1 v 0-0 Courceys.

The second half started in a similar fashion.  Orla Collins was outstanding at centre forward, covering the length and breathe of the pitch, instigating many set plays and playing an integral role in setting up the next three scores to follow; three further goals for Newcestown within the first four minutes of the second half.

Yet Courceys did not give up and two minutes later, scored their first goal.  Newcestown replied with a point, and Courceys, not to be outdone, put two points on the scoreboard.

Newcestown had a number of chances, but could not convert.  Newcestown introduced fresh legs, but the game remained at a standstill.  Then, in a reversal of roles, Courceys scored three consecutive goals within a ten minute period.

Though, the damage was done.  A few key positional switches combined with a strong early lead, ensured Newcestown remained ahead.  A valiant effort by a young Courceys team, but it was to be Newcestown to emerge victorious.  Congratulations to Orla Collins; recipient of Player of the Match award.

Final score: Newcestown 7-2 v 4-2 Courceys.
