U14 Cork County Feile Division 1

Cork was a busy place to be on Sunday 27th April, as a number of Feile blitzes got underway at various locations throughout the county and city.  Newcestown travelled to St Finbars to participate in three matches, coming away eventual winners of their Section as follows:-

Newcestown 2-2 v 1-1 St Finbars

Newcestown 2-7 v 1-1 Sarsfield

Newcestown 6-3 v 0-0 Ballyhea/Milford

The result of which, was a place in the semi-final against Aghabullogue on Wednesday 30th April at Castle Road.  This proved to be a much tougher contest.  Newcestown started well building a comfortable lead in the first ten minutes.  Aghabullogue came back in to the game, and by half time the teams were level at 4-1 apiece.  In the second half, marking was tight, and scores at a minimum, as both teams drew level again, but a vital goal in the last five minutes by corner forward Aoife M O’Sullivan (one of 5 goals Aoife scored!) ensured a place in the Feile Final for Newcestown.  Final score: Newcestown 6-2 v 5-2 Aghabullogue.

The Feile Division 1 Final got underway at 7.50pm Friday 2nd May at Castle Road in poor weather conditions.  It was clear from the first whistle both teams were evenly matched.  It would be twelve minutes before Newcestown’s midfielder Chloe O’Leary scored the first point.  Charleville replied a minute later scoring a goal.  Both defences worked tirelessly to keep the opposition at bay, as the battle of the backs commenced!

It was to be another six minutes before the next goal was scored; a second goal for Charleville.  Chloe O’Leary scored a second point for Newcestown, her first from play, a minute before half time, ably assisted by fellow midfielder Meabh O’Donovan.

Half time score: Newcestown 0-2 v 2-0 Charleville.

Newcestown started well, as full forward Maria Kenneally passed the ball to Chloe O’Leary and created space for Chloe to make a run through the middle of the Charleville defence, Chloe scoring a vital goal in the first minute of the second half.  Maria Kenneally, Meabh O’Donovan and Chloe O’Leary had a number of opportunities, as did Charleville, forcing Newcestown Goalie Orla Dinneen to make a number of fine saves.

Then, twenty-one minutes after the second half began, wing back Ciara O’Sullivan stepped up to take a free, dropping the ball in high, finding the stick of centre back Aishling O’Donovan, who passed to Meabh O’Donovan.  Meabh spotted Chloe free, but Chloe was unfortunate not to convert.  The ball was cleared, though not far enough, as the long reach of Maria Kenneally gave Newcestown another chance, Maria swiftly placing the ball over the bar to level the game.

An injury held up play providing a five minute breather for both sides.  When the game recommenced, Newcestown’s Maria Kenneally was fouled on approaching the Charleville backline and Chloe O’Leary stepped up to take the free with three minutes left to play.  One could hear a pin drop, such was the silence at Castle Road, but Chloe remained calm and struck a low fast ball over the crossbar to put Newcestown one point ahead.

The noise from the Newcestown supporters was deafening, and it was only fitting, given the contribution provided by Maria Kenneally throughout the game, that Maria would go on to score the final point of the game.

Charleville got a free in the dying minute, and again there was silence both on and off the pitch, but it was wing back Siobhan Kelleher who closed the door of opportunity on Charleville to clear the ball on the final whistle.  This Final had everything, and could have gone either way, as Charleville proved worthy opponents, but it was Newcestown’s rock solid defence and sheer perseverance by all fifteen players that secured a well deserved victory for Newcestown.

Final score: Newcestown 1-5 v 2-0 Charleville
