Newcestown Camogie u13 West Cork Championship Semi-Final v Clonakilty, Wednesday 16th September in Clonakilty GAA Grounds at 6.30pm.

Whenever these teams meet, a good, hard match is guaranteed.  This occasion was no different, as neither side scored for the first fifteen minutes, so tight was the battle for possession at midfield.  Good team work between centre back Siobhan Kelleher and midfielder Sarah Allen, saw the sliotar make its way in to the hand of centre forward Ciara O’Sullivan.  Ciara spotted full forward Aoife O’Sullivan free.  Aoife striking the ball with such power as to almost put a hole in the back of the Clonakilty net!

It was another five minutes before there was a score, a point by Clonakilty.  Aoife O’Sullivan had another opportunity at goal, hitting the crossbar, with Ciara O’Sullivan following through on the rebound, only to be foiled by a great save by the Clonakilty goalkeeper.  A short puck out fell sweetly to Siobhan Kelleher who was unfortunate not to score a point.

Newcestown goalkeeper Orla Dinneen pulled off a number of fine saves, excelling under pressure, ably assisted by her team mates in the full back and half back line.  Siobhan Kelleher continued to clean up in the backs, launching long pucks in to the forwards, and five minutes from half time, she found the stick of Ciara O’Sullivan, Ciara making no mistake in placing the ball in the back of the net, followed shortly with a second goal by Aoife O’Sullivan.

Half time score: Clonakilty 0-1 v 3-0 Newcestown.

The second half began with Newcestown facing in to the wind, giving the advantage to Clonakilty who scored a goal and point, five minutes in.  Newcestown replied with yet another goal by full forward Aoife O’Sullivan.

Then Clonakilty found an opportunity to score, converting another point.  Newcestown knuckled down defending more vigorously, with midfielders Sarah Allen and Lauren Wilson adding extra support to the backs where needed.  Then, a lovely passage of play between wing back Betty Coughlan and wing forwards Leah Jennings and Claudia Tanner, the end result, a second goal by centre forward Ciara O’Sullivan.

Clonakilty managed a final consolation goal, but it was not to be for the home side.  A well deserved victory by Newcestown who now meet Enniskeane in the u13 West Cork Championship Cup Final.  Date and time yet to be confirmed.

Final score: Clonakilty 2-2 v 5-0 Newcestown.
