Newcestown and Carbery Rangers under 16 hurlers met in the quarter final of the Rebel Óg West championship at a sun-drenched Rossmore last Friday evening. A place in the semi final against Pedlars was up for grabs.Carbery Rangers were quickest out of the blocks with wing forward christopher Predergast slipping over some lovely points to put the Rosscarbery boys three points up before Newcestown registered their first point through Colm Dinneen. After 15 minutes it was Dinneen again who struck for a goal to leave the scores level 0-4 to 1-1. From here to half time it was tit for tat with Ciaran Prendregast proving particularily effective for Carbery Rangers from frees.Gearoid O Donovan struck a long range point for Newcestown to close the scoring for the first half and left the teams level 1-6 to 0-9.

The second half was only drawing its first breaths when Colm Dinneen raised his second green flag to put some daylight between the teams. However Carbery Rangers refused to lie down and kept in touch with further points from Ciaran Prendregast and Rob Hegarty.A brace of points from Sean Galvin kept Newcestown in the ascendancy but the game was still in the melting pot coming down the home straight. The insurance point came courtesy of a free from Colm Dinneen after Dara MacAree was fouled. Final score Newcestown 2-11 Carbery Rangers 0-13.

Referee Connie Murphy did a fine job and had little trouble from two sporting teams.
