Newcestown Minor hurlers started the hurling championship against Fr. O Neills in Killbarry last Sunday. The pitch was in good condition but the game was dominated by a gale force wind blowing from one length of the field to the other. Newcestown started the game against the wind and were first to take the lead with a Cian Healy free after a foul on Luke Meade. The Performance of the Back Six and midfield of Newcestown against the strong wind was both diligent and hard working. No Fr. O'Neills player was given space to shoot unopposed and ball after ball was cleared. Leading by example Niall Murray, Micheal McSweeny and Cathal Clarke held firm despite the constant bombardment of sliotars from the Fr. O'Neills men. Healy was on the score sheet again from another free after more great work from Luke Meade. Jason Jordan Marked a strong first half performance with a point before another 2 Healy points from placed balls saw the second half finish with Newcestown a point ahead. The second half saw Fr. O Neills start brightly but there lead was short lived as hardworking Jack O’ Toole scored two identical points out on the right wing. Newcestown finished the game with Healy accurate as ever from four frees after great work from Meade, Curran, Kennelly and O’ Mahony. Jonathon McCarthy remained composed beneath the high ball throughout with Greg Murphy and Lee O’ Donovan sweeping up the breaks. Newcestown can now look forward to avoiding the back door and the third round. Final Score: Newcestown 11 Fr. O’Neills 9
