Newcestown lost out to Fr O'Neills in the final of the premier 2 minor hurling championship by the narrowest of margins in Páirc Uí Rinn on the evening of Monday 16 September. Fr O'Neills got off to a good start and were ahead by 1-6 to 0-3 after 15 minutes. They had the help of a strong wind. Five minutes before half time Jack O'Toole scored a goal for Newcestown. Shortly afterwards Fr O'Neills scored a second goal and led by 2-11 to 1-6 at half time.
Newcestown got off to a great start in the second half with a goal from Trevor Horgan with 31 minutes on the clock. Horgan added two more goals and Cian Healy scored another giving Newcestown a tally of 4-4 in the second half. With 5 minutes to go it was level. In the dying moments of the game Fr O'Neills pointed from play to regain the lead and win the game. The final score was Newcestown 5-10 Fr O'Neills 4-14.
It was an exciting, extremely competitive match.
