Tuesday last (4/9/2012) saw our minor hurlers head for Ballinlough to take on Russell Rovers in the East A final. Not many of our supporters knew where the east Cork side hail from and it can safely be said fewer of the Russell Rovers natives would be able to find Newcestown without a sat-nav.
The opening half was a tense affair with both sides keeping the umpires busy, waving wides rather than raising flags. After 10 minutes it was the team from Shanagarry who lead by 2 points to no score. Newcestown however came back and thanks to a Jason Jordan goal led by 1-3 to 0-5 at half time.
The second half saw a big improvement in the St John‘s lads performance. Scores were easier to come by and the backs began to get a measure of their opponents. Trevor Horgan plundered two quick goals and Peter Curran added another to leave Newcestown leading well, entering the final minutes. Try as they might Russell Rovers could not close the gap and Newcestown ran out winners on a score line of 4-10 to 0-10.
There were scenes of great jubilation afterwards as captain Andrew Shorten received the cup ensuring we retain our title for the second year running.
